There is much coverage in popular media concerning the numerous soldiers returning to the United States from lengthy wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the particular challenges these veterans face in returning to civilian life. Colonel Michael Gibler of the Army Rangers and Marian Eide, an associate professor of English at Texas A&M University (Barnard '87), are collecting stories of combat and return from the perspective of combat soldiers. Their aim is to publish a book that describes these wars from the ground, from the perspective of soldiers, and to reflect on the long-term effects soldiers carry home, whether it is PTSD, TBI, or a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility. They will be in New York from March 29 to March 31 and would like to meet with soldiers for 45-90 minutes for an open-ended interview/conversation about experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan, and at home.
To sign up email Professor Marian Eide.
Have you ever wanted to get more involved in the Columbia community? Affect real change in the lives of middle school and high school students throughout the city? Or just join a national grassroots movement?
Here’s your chance!
Generation Citizen’s mission is to empower historically under-represented youth to be active participants in the democratic system. We envision a country in which every individual is equipped and empowered to effectively participate in the political process as an engaged citizen capable of advocating for change. We fulfill our mission by training college students to partner with teachers to implement an action civics curriculum in lower-income secondary schools.
Generation Citizen's focus on taking action sets us apart from other civics programs. Generation Citizen students don’t read about the political process in a textbook, they learn it through direct engagement—meeting with representatives, lobbying local legislators, organizing letter-writing campaigns, writing opinion pieces for newspapers, and making documentaries to raise awareness about community issues they care about. Students then present their efforts to other GC students and community leaders in a citywide Civics Day event. By uniting high school and college students in the program, we instill within students a sense of agency in the political process and their own lives.
Generation Citizen currently has active programs in Providence, Boston, and New York City. Over the last year, we empowered over 2,000 youth to use their voices as active citizens.
