It's nearly time to vote for next year's Milvets executive board.

Voter registration will open on February 28 and run until March 7 at 11:59pm. Click this link to register to vote.

Candidates will address the general body on Thursday, March 7 (time and location TBD).

In honor of our Tenth Anniversary, the U.S Military Veterans of Columbia University cordially invites the School of General Studies, the Columbia University community, and the Greater New York City community to our Third Annual Military Ball for a celebration of service and scholarship; in conjunction with our sponsors and strategic partners. This event will serve as a platform to unite members of Columbia University’s distinguished veteran and student community; and then further expand that relationship to the leaders, scholars, and pioneers. Guests will include prominent national and local figures. 

Now that there is a date and venue, we appeal to you, our members, for assistance. In order for us to keep the ticket prices manageable for students we need to raise funding for this historic event. Without further sponsorship the tickets must be sold at higher cost to the student body. Before the tickets go on sale in these coming weeks we need you to help find benefactors. Independent donors can donate through the Milvets site. Larger donors or those seeking to sponsor the Ball might reach out to Milvets directly for a sponsorship package by emailing milvets@columbia.edu.

Bike America: Student Veterans Ride For Education
 
Bike America - Student Veterans Ride for Education is a cross-country bike ride being led by Kiersten Downs, president of the University of South Florida Student Veterans Association and member of the 2013 SVA student council. Kiersten's main goals are to raise awareness of and funds for Student Veterans of America. 

Her ride will be starting June 1, 2013 in San Francisco CA, and end in Washington, DC - where SVA is headquartered. 

Kiersten is looking for sponsors and donors to support her trek and she is also inviting other riders to join her in this exciting endeavor.  Potential riders can join up with Kiersten for the whole ride or in segments. The total mileage covered will be 3,800.

FREE Swim Program for Physically Challenged Veterans
 
Asphalt Green is a non-profit organization located on the Upper East Side of New York City.  We are dedicated to helping all New Yorkers achieve health through a lifetime of sports and fitness.  This year, we are proud to announce the launch of a new, FREE swim program for physically-challenged Veterans.
 
Next Saturday, February 16th, we will be hosting an open house from 3-5pm. The event will be an informal introduction to our instructors, current members and a chance to swim in our beautiful Olympic size pool!

Wounded Warrior Project Outreach

James O’Leary, the warrior outreach coordinator in NY and NJ for the Wounded Warrior Project, is currently reaching out to student/ veterans to get them involved in their program. They would also like to identify what is lacking in the universities and colleges when it comes to the needs of student veterans. He also want to inform student/ veterans who suffered any injury or illness while serving after 9/11 is eligible to become alumni. This includes PTSD, TBI, back injuries, knee injuries, gunshot wounds, etc.

Columbia's Counseling and Psychological Services is offering a support group for undergraduate and graduate student-veterans at Columbia.  The group will offer an opportunity to discuss student-veterans’ experiences of transitioning out of the military, adjusting to an academic environment, and integrating their military background with other aspects of their identity.

Free LSAT Program through PreProBono

PreProBono proudly brings back their LSAT Weekend Program series to NYC this semester.  These programs will be held at NYU Law School and Fordham Lincoln Center February 23-24, and Columbia Law School April 6-7.  All three programs are open to all students!

The unique and highly acclaimed weekend program helps predominantly low-income and minority pre-law students interested in public interest law prepare for the LSAT. Our program is free for all students who attend.  To ensure students who register are committed, they ask for a small deposit, fully returned upon completion of the program.

Interview Request

Noelle Martinez, a Columbia student, is working on her senior thesis and specifically exploring the experiences of both Afghan refugees and American veterans in transitioning to life in the U.S. following time spent in Afghanistan. This study (approved by the Columbia IRB) includes aspects of traumatic exposure, mental health, patriotism, and broader political beliefs. She would like to speak to a few more Columbia veterans about their experiences.  If you're interested in helping her, please email her at here

Take Part in a Women Veterans Survey

Keran Lehavot, a clinical psychologist, is working on a research project with Dr. Tracy Simpson that is designed to learn more about the health and life experiences of women Veterans. The study consists of an online survey and will take about 40 minutes to complete. For more details, see a description of their project below.

We invite you to participate in a study focusing on your life experiences as a woman Veteran and the challenges you may have faced. 

The goal of the Women Veterans’ Survey is to better understand the specific experiences of women Veterans and promote their health and well-being. We are especially interested in hearing the diverse voices within our communities.

Participate in interviews for After Combat: Soldiers Return Home from Millennial Wars

There is much coverage in popular media concerning the numerous soldiers returning to the United States from lengthy wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the particular challenges these veterans face in returning to civilian life.  Colonel Michael Gibler of the Army Rangers and Marian Eide, an associate professor of English at Texas A&M University (Barnard '87), are collecting stories of combat and return from the perspective of combat soldiers.  Their aim is to publish a book that describes these wars from the ground, from the perspective of soldiers, and to reflect on the long-term effects soldiers carry home, whether it is PTSD, TBI, or a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility.  They will be in New York from March 29 to March 31 and would like to meet with soldiers for 45-90 minutes for an open-ended interview/conversation about experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan, and at home.

Columbia Veterans Writing Workshop

This semester's first veterans writing workshop will be held at Columbia this Wednesday, February 13, Dodge Hall 415C, at 6:15pm.  Meeting will be on Wednesdays all semester. At the first meeting, they will hand out syllabuses then, discuss the focuses of this semester's work, and set up a reading for the spring!

SIPA Presents Watches Without Time: An American Soldier in Afghanistan

The Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies presents: "Watches Without Time: An American Soldier in Afghanistan" A book talk from Captain Matt Zeller United States Army Reserve (Ret.)  Matt Zeller was an embedded combat adviser with the Afghan security forces in 2008 and his book provides a vivid, real-time picture of what it is like to serve our country in war. He has described the book as "not a typical war memoir," because it highlights several rarely exposed aspects of the life of an American soldier such as the inadequate training he was given before deployment, and the difficulties he had reintegrating and adjusting back to civilian life after his return to the United States.

HIGH GROUND Screening 

The Rubin Museum of Art will be screening the 2012 film HIGH GROUND in which eleven veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars seek redemption in the Himalayas. Post-screening talk-backs include dialogues between neuroscientists and local war veterans, and tickets admit you to a free gallery tour.  “In its ability to let us hear firsthand what life-and-death combat does to the human body and spirit, this film has few peers.” — The Los Angeles Times
Four screenings take place February 9-17.

Veterans Intern Position with New York State Health Foundation

The New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth) is seeking a Veterans Affairs Intern to support NYSHealth’s efforts to meet the needs of returning veterans and their families. The successful candidate will be a graduate-level student. The intern will work with the Senior Fellow for Veterans Affairs on research, grantmaking, advocacy, grant oversight, and public policy formulation affecting veterans and their families. The internship experience is designed to provide the successful candidate with practical insight into serving the needs of veterans and their families. Veteran graduate-level students are strongly encouraged to apply.
